Our Founders









In October 12, 1969, Rockford was granted a charter for a Rockford Section of NCNW, Inc. 

One week later, the first NCNW Rockford Section meeting was held on October 19, 1969 at Booker Washington Community Center. 

Attorney Sarilyn Harper, Regional Director of NCNW came to Rockford

to interpret the purpose of the organization and oversee the installation of officers. 

Beatrice S. Cloud, Council Officer from Chicago discussed the four main areas of NCNW work as

politics, housing, employment, and education. Mrs. Constance Lane, Program. 



Chairwoman installed the following officers:

President, Estelle Black

1st Vice President, Lessa Owens

2nd Vice President, Glendia Dean

Recording Secretary, Pearl Hawks

Corresponding Secretary, Carrie Ellis

Treasurer, Gwendolyn Ish



















Over the past 44 years, NCNW has made a lasting mark in the Rockford community by hosting such events as

the Annual Black Family Reunion, Senior Thanksgiving Dinner, and the Safari Ball. 

NCNW has actively participated in mentoring and educational support to our youth, community service, and advocacy.
